Litigation and expert work
I assess exposure and risk from chemicals in water, air, and consumer products. I also provide legal teams with data management and data analytics support for their cases, without being a named expert witness.
This page gives a snapshot of the evaluations I have conducted by chemical. My CV has the full professional history.
By chemical
1,4-Dioxane and chlorinated solvents
Fate and transport, source attribution and drinking water exposure evaluation for a water utility. I built the case’s data and analytics hub: 100K+ results from decades of scanned lab reports, 15+ laboratories, and 30+ sampling locations, consolidated into one database and dashboard where the legal team and experts could explore the data and insights themselves.
Because I built the data and understand the hydrogeology and contaminant chemistry, including which chemicals travel with dioxane and which only look like they should, I could spot the gaps that mattered and turn them into analyses that moved the case forward.
PFAS (PFOA, PFOS, and related compounds)
Exposure and risk assessment from drinking water; toxicology and epidemiology review; analysis of regulatory process for developing MCLs for PFAS in drinking water. Data and analytics hub for soil, sediment, groundwater, and surface water results from multiple bellwethers during the MDL process. This work supported the largest drinking water settlements against aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) manufacturers in U.S. history, including $12.5B from 3M and $1.185B from DuPont, Chemours, Corteva, and others.
My team and I then built the data systems and the software packages that let 1,850+ public water systems document and pursue their claims under the AFFF settlements, with total recovery above $1.65B.
Silica
I evaluate worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) from cutting, sanding, and shaping engineered stone, particularly in California.
PCBs
I support litigation over PCB contamination of soil and sediment, with geospatial models of contamination from spill events and dashboards that explain the findings to legal teams and communities.
Lead
How ambient air lead resulted in elevated blood lead levels in children living near a smelter in La Oroya, Peru; how water lead levels relate to service line material in Benton Harbor, Michigan, and what tap water results imply for children's blood lead; and lead exposure from consumer products and food under California Proposition 65.
Asbestos
Reconstructing historical exposure from asbestos-containing building products such as mortar, and studying how fibers released by cutting asbestos cement pipe travel through the air. The transport study is under peer review.
Ethylene oxide
Cancer risk from sterilizer emissions, using dispersion modeling and site sampling data. I have evaluated the basis of EPA's IRIS cancer value and the NIOSH epidemiology behind it, and worked with emissions inventories, ambient monitoring data, and cancer registry data to test what the numbers mean for nearby communities.
Also
Formaldehyde
Led the sampling program and decay model for formaldehyde emissions from laminate flooring, then used them to estimate cancer risk in homes against Proposition 65 benchmarks. The work was presented to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and published in Risk Analysis.
Coal ash (arsenic, lead, silica)
Community and worker exposure after a coal ash spill, using years of permanent and mobile air monitoring data and individual exposure histories.
Radionuclides
Health risk from widespread contamination at a CERCLA Superfund site.
Benzene, VOCs, and other air pollutants
Air quality assessments using low-cost sensors, active sampling, and exposure chambers.
Hexavalent chromium, arsenic, and metals in food
Exposure assessments, expert critique, and responses to Daubert challenges.
Proposition 65 chemicals
Hundreds of assessments over more than ten years for the most litigated listed chemicals, including lead, cadmium, phthalates, BPA, acrylamide, and formaldehyde, plus screening tools for very large product inventories.
Data and analytics support for legal teams
Cases with large data or document components need infrastructure whether or not an expert is testifying. I can set that up independently of expert work:
- Intake and harmonization
- Combining data of all kinds, including lab reports, spreadsheets, and monitoring data, into one clean, documented dataset.
- Dashboards
- Maps, charts, and tables that let the legal team and experts explore the data and find the story themselves.
- Gap analysis
- Finding what the data cannot yet support, and what would close the gap to make the case stronger.
- Follow-on recommendations
- Sampling and analysis plans, additional analyses, and next steps.
Tell me about the matter and what you have, and I will tell you what I can do with it.
